How to Hack AT&T iPhone 5 or iPad mini Carrier Update File to Speed Up LTE

Posted: 20 May 2013 05:45 AM PDT

Do you think you’re not getting enough speed from your LTE? This hack might double or triple your LTE performance.

It is mankind’s instincts to go for speed. Internet speed has significantly increased for the past few years but it’s still not fast enough for many of us. If you’re one those folks who always strive to find something faster, then this hack is really for you.

If you’re interested with the technical aspects of this hack, read on. Otherwise, just head on straight to the tutorials below. In the carrier update file which you occasionally get from iTunes, band preferences were intentionally set by AT&T to limit you to a certain band rather than the band giving off the strongest signal, when available, both with LTE and HSPA+, according to the founder of this hack.

The same hack from T-Mobile LTE was released last week, which essentially modified the carrier file and ultimately improves your iPhone or iPad network performance with enhanced band management. In order to be able to hack something like this, one must have deep understanding of latest mobile network systems and how cell towers around you operate.

Before you begin, please proceed only at your own risks. Remember to backup your iPhone or iPad in case something goes wrong.

Steps:

1. Download the hacked carrier update in the link below (in order to protect the download link from leechers, please support by Liking, +1 or Tweet below)

Like, Tweet or +1 to reveal this free content, we will not bite, we promise.

2. Once downloaded, allow iTunes to accept carrier bundle updates by doing on these:

A. If you are using either a 32-bit or 64-bitWindows, you will need to open command prompt (Start > type CMD) and then type the following followed by enter:

  • 64-bit: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes then type: iTunes.exe/setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
  • 32-bit: cd C:\Program Files\iTunes then type: iTunes.exe/setPrefInt carrier-testing 1

B. If you own a Mac, open terminal and type the following and hit enter:

  • defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool true

3. Once that’s done, click on the tab for your iPhone 5 and click "Update" or "Check For Update" while holding down the Alt/Option key for Mac or the Shift key for Windows.

4. Point it to the file you just downloaded in step 2, select the file and click Open. iTunes will now update your carrier settings.

5. Reboot your iPhone to experience a faster connection on your iPhone.

In any case if you encounter a problem while doing the steps above, you can always roll back by doing the following:

  • Non Jailbroken iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings and Restore From Backup.
  • Jailbroken iPhone/iPad: Using iFile or similar, Go to var/mobile/Library/Carrier bundles/iPhone and delete the ATT_US.bundle folder and another folder called “Overlay” located in var/mobile/Library/Carrier Bundles. Reboot your iPhonedevice. In some cases, a second reboot may be required if the data indicator is only showing “3G”. This behavior is completely normal.

While some people may notice some speed increment, the hacker also put up a disclaimer saying:

This hack does NOT guarantee that you will see any dramatic changes or any change at all as certain areas are simply limited because of population density, natural features that degrade signal, the traffic on a specific tower, and even the amount of spectrum the tower is limited to as not all LTE towers have been upgraded to 10MHz on the downlink for higher bandwidth support. If you feel this hack has not helped you, we have provided a way back to defaults, if you choose to do so.

Well, we do hope that it’s going to be beneficial for you and all did go smoothly. If you think your network speed is faster, do share your experience below.

Supercapacitor Could Fully Charge Future iPhones and Smartphones in 20-30 Seconds

Posted: 19 May 2013 07:00 PM PDT

How long do you have to wait before your iPhone gets fully charged? Quite long. But a teenager’s new invention could charge future devices in a blink of an eye.

The battery is probably one of mankind’s biggest challenges to improve. It was in 1749 when Benjamin Franklin, the U.S. polymath and founding father, first used the term “battery” to describe a set of linked capacitors he used for his experiments with electricity according to Wikipedia. Fast forward to 264 years later, the battery on our smartphones rarely last us more than a few days.

While scientists and engineers are working on to increase battery life, a young scientist named Eesha Khare, of Saratoga, California has invented a tiny device that allows fast and rapid charging of batteries. It fits nicely inside cell phone batteries, allowing them to fully charge within 20-30 seconds.

She calls the fast-charging device as supercapacitor, that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space, charges quickly and holds its charge for a long time. It definitely sounds promising. Aside from that, this device also supports up to 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared with 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries.

According to Khare, it was because her “cell phone battery always dies” that inspired her to work on energy-storage technology.

Khare participated the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair last week and the judges were impressed. She received USD 50,000 in scholarship funds for her ground-breaking projects, along with another student who also won the award for his research on the mysteries of astrophysics.

It will probably take a few more years before her invention can be applied on consumer products. In the meantime, we’ll just have to stick to our power hungry devices and to always bring a battery pack if you’re going to be away from the wall outlet for an extended period of time.

7 Years Younger - Your Anti-Aging Tip Sheet
Your brain isn’t a muscle, but it exists with the same credo: Use it or lose it. And as with a muscle, if you exercise your brain, it’s going to get strong and supple. “Brain training is analogous to physical workouts,” says brain researcher Sherry L. Willis, Ph.D., a professor in the department of human development and family studies at Pennsylvania State University. “You have to cross-train—work different parts of your brain—and keep adding new challenges.”

Like physical exercise, brain training shouldn’t be a no-pain-no-gain situation. If it’s too hard, it will be frustrating and stressful, which is no good for recall. Nor should it be too easy—that will only lead to boredom and a lack of intellectual enhancement. But choose the right amount of mental stimulation, and it will create fresh connections in your brain. “You can actually generate new cells in the hippocampus,” says Peter Snyder, Ph.D., professor of clinical neurosciences at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University. Those new cells build cognitive reserves that are important for creating new memories and may protect against memory loss—even dementia—later in life. Here’s how to make your brain more fit.

Live a more thought-provoking life Highly educated people tend to have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s, mostly likely because education has gotten them in the habit of being mentally active. Yet you don’t need an advanced degree to get your brain moving. For instance, in the Bronx Aging Study, men and women ages 75 to 85 who regularly participated in six activities—reading, writing, playing board or card games, joining in group discussions, doing crossword puzzles, and playing music—were less likely to show symptoms of dementia. Taking classes can also be a brain booster, particularly if you learn a second language. Research from the University of Toronto suggests that being bilingual builds brain reserves that may help keep Alzheimer’s symptoms at bay for as long as four years. One reason may be that using two languages strengthens the portion of the brain that helps you focus and ignore distractions.

Game your gray matter Crossword puzzles, Sudoku, mazes, computer games, brain teasers, playing the guitar—anything that gets you using your noodle may help keep your brain fit, and it will certainly be fun trying. You will likely get the biggest cognitive boost by using both the left and the right hemispheres of the brain. Right-brain exercises include reading maps, working mazes, playing an instrument, and drawing (the right brain is more involved with spatial tasks). Left-brain exercises heighten your verbal and logic skills and include doing crossword puzzles and playing other types of word games. Puzzles and games that have you working against the clock, like Boggle, Scrabble, or the memory game Simon, may give your brain an extra lift by forcing you to pay attention, work quickly, and think flexibly.
