Natural Ways to Fight Bladder Infections

Bladder infection (cystitis) is a common and annoying problem, especially among women, whose urinary anatomy makes them more vulnerable than men. Frequent contributors or aggravators of cystitis include coffee and other forms of caffeine, cigarette and alcohol use, dehydration, excessively frequent or traumatic sex, stress, and poor hygiene (such as wiping from back to front instead of front to back). To end recurrent cystitis, try the following:

  1. Eliminate bladder irritants, like the ones mentioned above, from your diet.
  2. Increase your intake of water so that you urinate more frequently, allowing less time for any irritants to contact the bladder wall.
  3. Eat or drink more cranberries. Cranberries contain a substance that makes it difficult for bacteria to adhere to the wall of the bladder. Drink eight to 16 ounces of unsweetened cranberry juice a day, or try 500 mg daily of cranberry extract.
  4. Don't delay urination when you feel the urge.
  5. Consume probiotic foods, such as plain yogurt or kefir.
  6. Avoid wearing tight-fitting pants. Also, wear cotton-crotch underwear and pantyhose, and use mild detergents when washing underwear.
Simple Steps for Women's Health

Following a healthy lifestyle is important for all of us, and the general advice for healthy living applies to both men and women equally. As we age, however, gender may play a larger role in the health issues we experience. For women, monitoring female-related health concerns is important, as is taking preventive steps for the health of your heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. Unfortunately, women are at a disadvantage when it comes to matters of the heart as they often don't realize that heart disease is as much of a threat to them as it is to men. They are less likely than men to believe they're having a heart attack and therefore are more likely to put off seeking treatment. In addition, doctors tend to treat women less aggressively with surgery, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors or even aspirin after a heart attack. Dr. Weil on Healthy Aging can help you keep your heart healthy: we have over 300 anti-inflammatory recipes, in-depth fitness advice (including how-to videos), and mind-body techniques you can practice anywhere to help minimize unhealthy stress.
