Posted: 10 Jun 2013 11:43 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-06-10 at 9.34.01 PMFor those of you who have been keeping away from twitter and the rest of the internet, Apple are announcing their latest version of iOS as we speak. Included in this latest iteration of grid icons is a new multitasking layout, as seen above; remind you of anything?

Video & Gallery: Lumia 520 Electric Yellow Unboxing

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 09:21 AM PDT

WP_20130609_002We got our hands on the quirky little Lumia 520 to test out (gracias Nokia Jordan), so check out our unboxing video & gallery below + some of our first thoughts on the device:

And here’s the customary Flickr gallery/Set either in the slideshow below, or the at the Flickr link:

My first thoughts on the device (besides the awesome color) are a bit mixed, I’ve used both the 720 and 620 which have similar internals as the 520, yet the 520 seems to be noticeably slower (especially in rooms chat); I think this might be related to using cheaper conductors and transistors inside the device as a cost cutting measure?. Also I’m having some issues with the physical camera shutter button; as the second part of the two stage shutter fails to click for some reason (I assume the cases hardware case and the actual phone’s aren’t aligned, but no matter what I do it won’t work right).

Immediately noticeable also is the fact that the 520 lacks Nokia’s amazing CBD display, which is why the screen has a greyish tint to it; this helps you appreciate the CBD on the 920 and others even more (the difference is visible in the image below)

One of the features of the 920 that helps hide the bulk of the bezzel is the fact that when the screen is off you can’t really tell where the screen ends and the bezzel starts; unfortunately that’s not the case for the 520 as obvious from the pic below:

Of course we’re talking about a device that costs $150 so you can’t really complain; be sure to stay tuned for more coverage; and as always let me know what you guys wanna see in the phone.

Design Tweaks 3: Nokia EOS with new textured back

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 03:12 AM PDT

eos 3 texture

So you may have seen a couple of posts so far tweaking the Nokia EOS humps.

Above, it has a somewhat leathery look about it. The camera hump is also textured.

Below you can see the previous smooth iterations on the back but textured on the camera hump.

Here, completely smooth.

The PhoneDesigner guy is interested in what textures you’d like to see.

Nokia Glance Screen Beta on Nokia Lumia 925 with double tap to unlock.

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 02:42 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-06-10 at 10.32.07

As a surprise for Nokia Lumia 925 owners, they will be getting the Nokia Glance Screen Beta app. The always on clock which also notifies when the battery is low.

It’ll have night mode for reduced glare in the dark as well as the double-tap to unlock first seen in the Nokia N9 and now living in the new Asha touch series.

When I went back to the N9 for a week, I loved being able to just glance at it to see the time. No need to press the lock button or tap it. Useful as a bedside clock or just as a clock in your pocket.

hello 925

Charging stand would have a clock feature anyway.

Nokia Glance Screen will be available to most WP8 Nokia Lumia smartphones when the Lumia Amber update arrives. Not a limitation then for non-OLED screens (which would be the most power efficient, though Nokia has had this kind of always on clock on non OLED before).

What about notifications? Might we eventually see Sleep Screen?

Press Release: Pedal to the Metal: Sales Begin for the Nokia Lumia 925

Posted: 10 Jun 2013 02:32 AM PDT

Screen Shot 2013-06-10 at 10.35.18
Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the sales start for Nokia Lumia 925, which introduces a metal design and showcases the latestPureView camera innovation, new features and third party applications for the Nokia Lumia range. Following the sales start in Germany, the smartphone will continue to roll out next in other European markets and China, followed by the U.S. and other markets worldwide.

The Nokia Lumia 925 captures the best low-light images thanks to the most advanced lens technology and next-generation imaging software. It also features the new Nokia Smart Camera, an easy way to capture ten images at once and edit them afterwards with options like Best Shot and Action Shot.

The Nokia Lumia 925 introduces metal for the first time to the Nokia Lumia range with the polycarbonate back coming in white, grey or black. A wireless charging cover, available separately in white, black, yellow, and red can be clipped onto the back of the phone to take advantage of Nokia’s extensive wireless charging accessories and ecosystem.

An additional feature coming to Lumia first with the Nokia Lumia 925 is a beta version of the Nokia Glance Screen introducing the standby screen clock. Now, with a quick look and without pushing any buttons, users can see the time and the battery level indicator on the screen when the phone is not used. A double tap on the standby screen now wakes the phone up, making it easier to unlock.

The Nokia Lumia 925 offers a variety of exclusive services such as Nokia Music for unlimited streaming of free music playlists. The suite of integrated location and navigation services include HERE Drive+ and HERE Maps. Additionally, HERE Maps with augmented reality view is available in the Store for download.
